How would you record these videos?

Hey, so I just stumbled along this awesome site:

http://www.blogotheque.net/takeawayshows/
http://www.dailymotion.com/lablogotheque

Where some Parisian dude has filmed and recorded the sound of various indie bands performing in Paris. The environments are strange, from a song in a gig to walking down the street to in a small cafe.

And yet the sound is often impeccable, both in quality of recording and the levels. Would someone with some audio experience please take a look the some and see if they can work out how you would get the sound recorded. My thinking is with a separate audio device or wireless mics or something. Either way often you'll have a full band playing and they all seem to be included. A boom wouldn't work

The site has given me some inspiration to do the same with some London bands, but I've no idea how to get audio that seems so good. There's also rarely hiss & background noise. It's like the whole scene gets recorded sound wise and it's puzzling me how when it's all 'spontaneous'.

I've put some samples before so you can see what I mean. I'm really a total nothing with audio so these seem to be awesome. I'd really appreciate some advice on how I could get such awesome audio myself.

Oh dear! Works fine for me.

In the third video, the cafe one, you can see shots of the videographer in a mirror and although I can't make out his camera, looks like an HVX, you can see he's got a mic mounted on the front of the camera.

In another of his videos, of the band Beirut, the singer, Zach, is mic'd up wirelessly. I can only imagine that the rest of the band must themselves be mic'd up and he must mix it all in post. That's the only way I can think of getting the sound.

Hi Andrew,

Glad you are inspired by the audio - yes, you could see their lavaliers and at 1:16 on the Paris clip you can see the audio engineer - he has mic in hand, earbuds for monitoring, and I'd guess a field mixer/recorder (I doubt they're using the XL-2 audio tracks, instead mixing in post). I must be getting picky though since I felt they needed a high-pass filter to reduce the distortion on the low frequencies.

Yes, this kind of setup is light-years ahead of an onboard camera mic.

Good luck, Michael
