How would you rate the Sony MDR-V6's?

They are the industry standard. They are not the best sounding headphones by any means but they are good enough to hear the BG noise that you are listening for. They are full ear which seals out BG ambient so you can hear your recorded signal. They are small, they fold, they are cheap. They are highly efficient.

That's why about 90% of sound mixers use them.

I wouldn't buy them for home usage but for location sound, they are superb.

For all intents and purposes, they are very similar. I also use the V-600s, they have more padding although they don't fold down as small. They sound the same, they are just more comfortable to wear for extended periods of time.

anyone know why sony has these three models that are so similar? Especially the 7506 and v6 seem to be the exact same model.

I know that they have made the V6s a lot longer than the 7506s. I have owned both and yes, they do seem basically the same. The V-600s are different in appearance and have more padding. If I recall, the V-600s I think may be marketed more toward DJs than production sound. I also recall that the V6s may have been marketed more as a consumer set of headphones while I think the 7506s are marketed more toward pros?

It's been several years since I have bought any of these so who knows, I'm gettin' pretty senile and forget the details too ;-)

The MDR-V6's are the original phones, and were superseded by by the 7506's. It seems to me that the V6's might have even been unavailable for some period of time. If you look at the replacement parts, they are identical except for the cord, which has a gold plug on the 7506. I have purchased several replacement foam earpads for my early 90's pair of V6's as well as replacements for the 7506's and they are interchangeable.

In my studio I have one really old pair of V6's and 5 pair of 7506's and the only way I can really tell the difference is by feel. They have been dropped, crushed, abused frozen, lightly scorched, and continue to work.

A lot of people consider the V600s to be inferior, but more comfortable phones. I don't have them so I can't comment.

Get the 7506's. You will like them.
