how would you go about creating a character out of an inanimate object?

Hi,

so i was thinking.... how do you make a character out of inanimate objects, concepts, or abstract things?

for example:

a location (e.g. a house)
time
physical reality
isolation

a location would be like a haunted house.
time would be like stephan king's "the langoliers"
physical reality would be like Wonderland or Oz
isolation would be like the movie "lifepod"

etcetera.

any thoughts?

HUH?

I think you may be referring to things such as when the haunted house is stopping the protag from his goal and not a actual person as the antagonist.

In that case, still not sure what your asking. :P

One example: Chronicles of Riddick, special features (VFX)-- they talked about the fire wall on Crematorium, how they wanted it to have claws like a tiger as it chased Riddick et al across the surface. You can see that when you watch the fire chasing them.

thanks guys... those are very good examples (i love Wilson).

i suppose for any inanimate object to be a character, other characters have to interact with it?

maybe HAL... but it talked, too (artificial intelligence).

haven't seen any alien movies in a long while.. i'll check it out.

i've always found it fascinating when there's an inanimate object affecting other characters.

what i liked about Wilson in Castaway is that it kept the protagonist sane.

i remember the fiery surface of the planet in Riddick, but it didn't have a mind of its own, so to speak. neither did wilson, i guess.

hmm....

thinking out loud.

"Christine" a possessed/demonic car. Tarkovsky's "Stalker" might encompass all of your examples with the zone.

i think i remember christine and Rose Red... i'll have to watch them again.

Tarkovsky's "Stalker" might encompass all of your examples with the zone.

man, i've read quite a bit about Tarkovsky, but never seen a film of his. maybe i should start.
