How Would You Find This Location...

I didn't know where to post this so sorry if this is not the best forum for it...

However...

I need an old haunted house. Not super Vincent Price level but the kind of house that you might see on Haunted History or one of those shows... one that is old and has character, but not 'Addams Family' level spooky. The kind of house might find in the outskirts of a metropolitan neighborhood that is again, old, has character, etc...

Also ideally I could find it empty and be able to shoot for about 6 to 8 days. I could either pay for some power for that time or if it's already wired that's fine too.

I've considered trying to contact actual 'haunted houses' about some extra publicity... I've considered trying to find older houses in foreclosure and contacting the owner...

I'd love some ideas here because I am stumped.

Also if you happen to be in the Greater Atlanta area and have or know someone who has an old house with character (it doesn't have to be big, in fact a smaller house would be preferable) and would like an Associate Producer credit..... :Drogar-Dum(DBG):

If you're in Atlanta, why not ring up the folks over at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) as they have a film school, Savannah has a LOT of these kinds of homes, and I am sure the school has leveraged this kind of thing in the past.

Alternately, I'd say contacting the film office(s) in your state would be prudent, and they would have all the info you need.

I generally look up real estate listings online and contact realtors by phone and/or contact the local film office whose job it is to aid film producers with finding locations. You can also just drive around and approach people directly.

The major hurdle is having adequate insurance and arriving at a location fee. I doubt you will be able to just find an empty house as you describe for no cost. Realtors don't do anything for free, and if it's an empty home, you'd most likely have to deal with a realtor.

.

Thank you for the responses.

I will try both... SCAD is willing to help any film productions regardless of whether or not anyone involved in the production is going or went to SCAD? Plus, I went to a rival art school, ha ha.

call your local film office. here is SF ours is about worthless, however across the bay in Oakland and just south of me in San Matio, they are really helpfull.

The Savannah Film Commission is VERY helpful and professional. I've worked with Melissa Fader (locations specialist) in the past. She is very on the ball. You'll have no problem working with them.

As far as SCAD is concerned, you should contact the office of career services. They can schedule an open interest meeting and set you up with interested students wanting to work.

SCAD has every aspect of film making as a major or minor, so if you need something, fishing out of the population is pretty easy.

I used to be one of those kiddos.

If you have any questions about Savannah or SCAD feel free to ask or PM me, I lived there for the last 5 years earning my BFA in Film and Television.

Off the top of my head TWO GREAT locations in Savannah: Pete's Shoe Repair (abandoned building on corner of Habersham and Broughton , and a very famous empty haunted mansion at 13 Oglethorpe Ave. Best of luck! There is also a very large abandoned hospital on Drayton st.

Ah, when SCAD was mentioned, I was hoping you were speaking of the SCAD Atlanta... now I see. I'd love to shoot in Savannah but I don't think it will be feasible for me.

This is a low to no budget project.

Regardless, nice to know there are such excellent options out there, and pretty close to me, thank you Ryan and I will keep this info in mind.

You already mentioned some great locations... my problem is the production will be in or around ATL, the haunted house is a primary location, we'll need 6 to 8 days there approximately...

Thanks again.

You could also try posting on Craigslist for the location, giving an accurate description of what it is you want. After trying the free route, you could always try the local classified ads in the area papers.
