How Would This Audio Setup Do?

Ok, so I've been doing a lot of reading on audio setups and what equipment is good and what's downright bad. This is the setup I'm thinking about getting please let me know if this setup would be good for making shortfilms/features.

Audio-Technica AT4073A
Rycote 29cm Medium Hole Softie

Oktava MK012A
Rycote Baby Ball Gag Windshield 20mm
Rycote Windjammer for Baby Ball Gag Windshield

Sound Devices MM-1
Edirol R-1

I know I still need shockmounts and boom pole but I just want to know if, say the R-1 is going to be a good enough recorder? I read that the Marantz pmd 660 is garbage unless you get it moded by oade which I can't cause they don't ship to Canada and the MicroTrack is pretty bad from the sounds of the half assed phantom power and the weak internal batteries.

This is to get me started so I'm trying to keep things some what cheaper. Let me know what you think (I know lots of people ask this I'm just really wondering mainly about the MM-1 and Edirol and if they will work alright together).

Thanks a bunch!

Firstly, 29cm is for the At40y1a I believe, but the 4073, so watch for that...

Secondly, get an SD mixer, and dont look back... Then phantom etc etc wont ever be an issue for you.

Not too up to spec on the R-1.

Good luck!

you need 18 cm rycote
what about mm-1 , its nice preamp , don't give you much for mixing if you need more then 2 microphones . and very soon you will need it .
if you are looking for nice mixer in moderate price ,start with wendt 3 its about twice the mm1 and but would be better if you will do another step to run more then 1 mike in the future .

you also can find 4 channel used mixers wendt for about 200 more ( there is nothing wrong to get used if it in good shape and wendt ( or under psc name before) are rugest as hell.
you can also pick up AD 260-( Audio Developments) For the same price as wendt3 , excellent mixer .
i will not advise you about SDmix pre since it quit limiting one and good mainly as additional tool for some one who already have one

Get a used Sound Devices MixPre or Shure FP24... they are the same mixer and can be had for under $400 used. Watch Ebay for that. I sold an mm-1 to a friend for $300 but I included a wireless holster worth $20 so it was like selling it for $280. If you're a little patient you'll be able to get the FP24 for another hundred bucks or so. I was ready to pay $500 used and didn't have to. Another friend of mine on these boards... got a similar deal.

Hell if George would convince that buddy of his to split up his 302/Petrol you could buy MY fp24 for that price.

I'd wait on the mm-1 and look for a used mixer... anything George mentioned above or my suggestions... used. In that last sentence I think George means that he doesn't usually recommend 2-channel mixers but that he still thinks the mixpre or fp24 is a good choice... but limited at only 2 channels.

The BEST way is to proceed as above, and look for a used mixer with at least 3 channels of input.

But a lot depends on your particular situation. How many crew are you going to have? Will you have a dedicated, trained soundperson?

If you are going to be getting by with a 2 man crew (1 to shoot, 1 to boom) for the forseeable future, then an MM-1 will work just fine. When you get a few films under your belt and you are able to attract more crew then you can get a 3 channel mixer. The MM-1 can then still function as a way for the boomman to have a feed back from the camera/recorder of what's going to tape/disk.
