how would I get this EXACT effect?

It looks like the kids have big reflectors bouncing the light back at them on the fill side of their faces.

The very blue sky could either be a result of some post work, or perhaps they had some gradient ND filters and/or a polorizer filter.

The gradND will drop the top of the frame down to expose better and the polarizer will filter the light rays and increase the blue in the sky.

First, digital can't do everything film can do and vice versa. second what digital camera will you be shooting with, that makes a big difference as well. For instance the HVX has 5 to 6 stops of lattitude, so to keep the look the same as in that clip is not going to happen, but you can get pretty close. As prodigy said you will need some fill on the children sitting, either HMI's or gold bounce (so it looks to me anyway) Also your going to have to use a lens adapter to get the shallow depth of field. It will take a grad filter either ND or Blue or maybe both. Watch when the little girl gets up that the top,of hewr head doesn't go into the grad area to deep or it'll dead give away. Of course all the animation is laid in during post.

>can't tell if they use lights or not,

Take a look at the shadows. There is the main back light shadow from the sun, but there is also a second hard shadow on the lawn, and a very soft diffuse shadow against the wall. These are clues as to how it was lit.

gotcha -- thanks guys!

definitely wasn't greenscreened though,

what camera do you suggest to mess around with to get this type of effect?

That's not a natural sky, either. That's a studio setup. I'd bet money on it. Look for the multiple hotspots on the background cyc.

Just ask him!

Just ask him!

As Nando Costa is a brazilian artist living and working in US I just sent him a email asking how did he get that look.
Let's see if he aswer me or just post the answer here,
Cheers
