I was thinking just projecting it on a wall and sitting a DVX right above the projector and just filming it. I think that's the simplest method. Anything better?
what if I wanted to try and get the full exposure lattitude of the Super8 footage? Could I film it twice at 2 different exposures and then combine them later, like a lot of people do with still photography.
I do this and it isn´t a good way. jittering and unsteady images. If you want to transfer the birthday´s brother OK will be right but if you looking for a good quality (short, music video)you can go to the S8 film transfers.
Take your film to Pro8mm in Burbank (www.pro8mm.com) and they will do a telecine transfer for you. You can get your project back on MiniDV, and they can do color correction/exposure adjustment as well. Telecine is the only way to get the true depth of your footage.
I've posted this before but here's another example of projecting Super8 footage on to a small piece of bright white ink jet paper and just shooting it with a DVX. Make sure the shutter is set to 1/24 and that you are shooting either 24p or 24pa to avoid flicker.
Also, if you leave the DVX on auto exposure you are going to get a lot of fluctuation and flashes depending on how much contrast and lighting changes there are between scenes. You can go back and set the exposure to manual for those scenes that are important.
Oh yeah, one more thing, I shoot everything at 24fps with Super8 so this footage was shot at that speed. I think 18fps was a more popular choice at the time because people didn't notice the difference in the motion blur too much and they were able to get more record time.
