How will the 2012 bill to ban inefficient incandescent bulbs going to affect us?

Seriously, before having a conniption, go actually read the bill. It's not that bad.
In 10 years we'll have to pay more for incandescents since fewer manufacturers will make them, but the world will not stop rotating.

No, but every lamp in our house will have a bulb full of mercury in it -- which is nasty, toxic stuff. I'm stockpiling incandescants!

Yes, life as we know it will go on and my guess is that people that want to use incandescents will just pay the higher price as ProfessorU said. CFL is a personal taste thing. I never see flicker in the self-ballasted ones I use and that includes with video I shoot at any shutter speed and frame rate. You just have to be choosy about which ones you get as they are not all perfect for sure. Most people I have talked to have had good results with the N:Visions from Home Depot.

They can have my incandescents when they pry them from my cold dead hands! :2vrolijk_08:

What ever happened to letting the FREE MARKET determine product availability?

Richard-

I will be swapping those mogul base CFL's I ordered out with tungsten as needed.
Are you saying that a tungsten bulb with diffusion has similar dropoff to a CFL?
Seems like CFL's have a really short throw.

Fred

Hi Fred,

It's just a quality of any soft light that it doesn't "throw" well. Stick diffusion in front of the tungsten bulbs and you'll find the same issue. So its not just a "CFL" thing, its a soft light thing.

The bill doesn't MANDATE CFLs, just a certain efficiency for bulbs within a certain brightness range. There are some halogen tungsten fixtures already in existence that meet the bill's requirements, plus LED lights, cold cathode, neon, etc.
