How were these titles done?

I would say 3d and particle simulation like smoke.
And just add wind / gravity

You could probably do it in AE but off the top of my head I only have a vauge idea and would have to think about it.

You could accomplish something similar using Trapcode Form and a few of the built-in effects. Another approach would be live action and text mattes, masks, etc if you had the resources.

Here is a tutorial that could get you close. I just watched the preview and although they aren't identical, you could get 90% there pretty quickly I think.

They are nice - grungy. I would say you could emulate, if not duplicate this look in Apple Motion using a combination of blur/fade effects and perhaps some particle generator work.

John Bull Print Set (childrens rubber print set)

Load up with plenty of ink - press your type onto a non-porous surface such as white plastic.

Tape the plastic to the bottom of the sink/bath and fill with water - the ink will diffuse - you might have to speed the final footage up in AE.
