How To/Who To

Anyone have any tips on how to or who to contact to try and get a company interest (financially) in a project?

For instance, I have an idea for a documentary piece and a friend suggested contacting the discovery channel to see if they would be interested.

Of course, not limited to discovery channel but- just an example…

Problem is, I’ve never tried to pitch something in this way and don’t know the best way to get started.

thanks

If the documentary tackles a certain message or cause (poverty, AIDS, animal rights, etc.) then you might want to contact organizations that support those causes. Most have grants and will help you. But it's not as easy as, "This is what I want to do." and they give you money.

Discovery Channel will be a tough sell. They typically purchases already completed independent projects to air. Or they have their own freelance/full-time filmmakers who get paid for projects they do. In other words, unless you have a great portfolio/reel, you might have a hard time getting funding from them. Your best bet might be to complete the project on your own and then try to sell it to Discovery Channel.

I could be completely wrong but, either way, good luck and go for it!!!

I have a reel but its all really edgy stuff....Im presently scripting a reel that has a broader appeal/states my companies case more clearly...
