How to use this stand?

Hi there,

I just picked up a light stand and just thought I'd ask some advice on how to attach my lights to it. They were throwing the stand out at the studio I work at and I picked it up quick time! It's a heavy duty Arri light stand that extends about 12 feet. I have attached a picture of the head:

Maybe the purpose of this head is so you can attach more then one light to it. If so, how do I do that? I guess I have to but some kind of bar that fits through the holes and then I can clamp it in.

To just get one light on that maybe I need to take off that clamp head and attach a normal fixture for a light. Where would I buy one of these?

I have 2, 1000w strand lights at home that I would like to be able to attach to this stand. Here is a picture of the fitting:

Any advice on how to get my lights fixed to this beauty would be much appreciated!

That's a C-stand, all you have to do is take off the grip head and there should be a 5/8'' stud underneath that'll fit your light. Alternatively, you can add an arm to that grip head with the correct diameter that'll allow you to mount your light forward from the stand.

By adding the arm would that also give me the option to fix more then one light to the stand (providing I had the right arm)?

Where would I find one of these arms?

It's not really designed as a light stand, used more often for holding flags that cut and shape the light. That's what the arm is for. But they'll work as a light stand in a pinch. C-stands and their assorted parts can be rigged any number of ways.

The circular clamp with the small 'hole', to me looks like for an umbrella or rod for a flag. There is not enough there to hold a lamp. The lamp, if any, would be screwed on the top of the pole, so the weight would be carried by the pole, and not have a 'lever arm' off to the side...

Here's an example (sort of difficult to find such...)

The light can be mounted that way if properly sandbagged. On one shoot we mounted a Kino DivaLite 400 on the very edge of the arm to use as a backlight. The whole setup was very stable through the 5-6 hours of shooting. The advantage is that the light stand can be off to the side and out of the shot. But as Justin said there are myriads of ways that C-stand can be rigged to hold light. It's also possible to attached clamps with 5/8'' head anywhere on the stand that the light can be attached to.
