What do you use the 12 db tone for, when you're in the output to video display? Is it to match the level of the audio in the finished product? If so, how do you do it, do you just set the 12db tone until it sounds ok and doesn't hurt your ears then go back and adjust the overall level of the sound in the finished product , or what? Guidance appreciated.

thanks

Use the tone to set the headphones to a level that is comfortable to work with. It is your reference tone. Now, don't change the level on your computer again. From this point on, you'll be using your meters (and ears) to do your audio finishing. Getting all the dialogue evened out, getting the correct levels for soundfx, soundtrack etc. The average volume for material destined for broadcast and VHS is -12db with peak volume at -6 db and -3 db respectively.
