I just bought the Saramonic 3.5mm adapter http://amzn.to/1AseXRb so i can plug 2 lav mics into my dslr at once. The problem is i can either get 1 mic on the left side and 1 on the right, or i can get them mixed on the same audio track. I am trying to find a way to keep them seperate so is there a way i can split the stereo track and make them 2 seperate audio tracks? then i can make them both mono and edit them separately?

Method 1: Highlight the video file in the project panel. Go to clip/audio options/breakout to mono

Method 2: duplicate up the audio track on the timeline, one under the other. Drop the Fill from left effect on one track, and drop the fill from right effect on the other.

I tried method 1 but the breakout to mono is light gray and wont let me select it. Do I have to do something special to get this feature to work? Thanks the reply, dont know why i didnt think of the 2nd method but im hoping to get the first one to work.

Be sure you're highlighting the clip from the Project Panel or Source Panel and not the timeline. You can still get to "Modify Clip" by highlighting it in the timeline but the stereo/mono/etc dropdown will be grayed out.

If the audio is already on the timeline you'll have to modify it and then edit the new version into the timeline.

import the file, once in the project box, right click, then modify, then audio channels - you can then set it to 2 channels, and select mono - when you then bring it into the timeline it comes in as a video track and two separate mono tracks!

Not to get off-topic... but, in Sony Vegas Pro, it's a simple right-click of the audio event (clip) and select which track(s) in the context menu.
Additionally, in the master preferences menu assign, it can globally assign all inserted stereo or poly files as separate mono tracks.
