what's the best way to move captured clips from an external harddrive to my computer itself?

i had captured 4 cameras on an external drive in final cut pro. each one was like an hour.

then i got a new computer. i hooked up the external harddrive to this new computer and was able to open up my fcp project and all the captured footage is there. but i found that my external drive was crap and slowing me down and if i move clips to my regular harddrive, it works faster and no dropped frames.

so how can move the clips which don't seem to be labeled on my external, to my computer?

if i look on my external which is my scratch disk i see lots of unlabeld stuff altho i named the clips in fcp..

ahhh i'm confusing even myself right now.... i'm exporting each clip out as a quicktime mov to my computer right now, but each one will take 30 minutes so just wondering if there's a faster way...

Just grab the folder the clips are in and drag it wherever you want it to go. Disconnect the external, relaunch FCP and everything should appear off-line. Use the "reconnect media" function to show FCP where the media is located now and you are good to go. Also, when you rename clips in the browser it does not rename the QT file unless you specifically tell FCP to do so (this feature is only in FCP 6).

k i'm gonna try that. another question. since my hard drive is 750GB and really awesome and fast, and my external hard drive is 500gb and seems to slow me down, is it ok for me to use my hard drive as my scratch disk?

It is better to use a non-operating-system-drive for your scratch drive. It will work just fine, but not ideal. Can you add another internal drive for scratch only? Also, were you connecting the external drive with FW400 or USB2.0? FW800 or SATA is much quicker and will support more video streams with higher resolution before dropping frames.

the external hard drive is firewire. dont know if its 400 or 800... it says Iomega on the drive itself.. if that means anything..

i could set it as my scratch disk but i WAS getting dropped frames until i moved my clips from the scratch disk to my hard drive. now i'm really confused.
