I saved my time line from NLE onto a portable hdd and now i'd like to transfer this back to my new computer which has same NLE installed..

is there a method for this? or do I have to re-do my entire edit from scratch.

Note: The time line opens on the computer through the the portable HDD but I dont want to use the portable HDD to edit the film.

If you have enough space on your internal drive (on your new computer) you can transfer the files there, but I don't think it's a very efficient use of a computer's internal HD (which usually have limited space). I don't know about other NLE's but with Final Cut you need to reconnect your files (capture, etc.) and reset the scratch disks once you open up a time line on another computer running FCP.

With Sony Vegas, I can copy the project file and all of the captured video files to any other hard drive. When I launch the project from the new drive, if it doesn't have the same drive letter as the old drive, then it asks me for the location of the files. From that point on, it works just fine.

I have more then enough space on my New Computer... should I work off my portable hdd's? I bought a mini HDD and stored my time line on it before dismantling my old computer... the time line opens fine in new computer... how stable are those mini hdd's?

If you have enough space work off your startup disk on your computer. You can always transfer the files later if you run out of space. Either way I would back up to an ext. HD...
