How to tell what each filter is for?

I am borrowing several filters from someone (he is out of the country), and I have no idea what each is for.

Is there anyway for someone who has no clue (me) to figure out what each filter is intended for? They are each in separate packets without anything to identify them.

Thanks.

are they 4x4 or circular. Usually the the bezel around the circular ones have markings. The grey ones are usually ND or polarizers. To tell the polarizer, look at some reflections in a window or someting shiny and slowly rotate the filter...Some of the reflections will appear and dissapear. A blue one or an orange one usually corrects the color temperature depending on what kind of film is being shot, which is basically useless for video, since you can white balance. Some might have a slight diffused look to them and that is self explanatory. Some may have a slight dark speckled look, those are diffusers that keep the blacks black somewhat. Anyway, need more info.
