How to stream h.264?

Hey, I realize that out there somewhere the must be some thread about streaming h.264 but I can't find a goddamn one. It's starting to get on my nerves. I can't figure out how to get quicktime to start loading and play what it has so far as opposed to loading the entire thing, and then playing it.

Example
(streaming tone.. quaint little piece by Mr. Robinette) http://robinettefilms.com/downloads/Tone_Small.mov

(non streaming [fulldownload .. lame])

I'm guessing maybe you might need to install a server or something.

Can anyone enlighten me please?

What you have linked to from my site is just the raw .mov file that is sitting on my server. There is no web page or coding going into what you see, the browser is taking care of it all.

When I encode for web through QT Pro, I make sure to check the "prepare for streaming - compressed header" option and the optimize for streaming option in the encoding dialogue.

Honestly it has always just worked for me, I never had to do anything.

I think Ethan's question was just answered by William.

The video clip on his site loads the beginning faster so that the viewer can immediately start watching the video. Once the header is loaded, the second half of the clip can take more time to load.

As William said, this is all done with a Quicktime Pro conversion.

If you're trying to stream your h.264 via Flash 9:

  1. It has to be in an mp4 container
  2. The MOOV atom has to be at the beginning of the header.
There are applications out there that move the MOOV ATOM
