How to smooth lines and add drop shadow?

Okay I have an image where I successfully cut the background out of the picture leaving the person in the foreground. What tool do I need to use to smooth out the lines that makes up his body? Also I have some photos in magazines that were photoshopped and I noticed a drop shadow or almost like a white border that goes around their who body to make them stand out just a tad....How do I get that look?

Yea I just saw how I could add a drop shadow there...can't figure out how I can add a slight glow around the person or object. Also when I start my project, I select transparent because I want to be able to cut the background out of the image then replace it with something else. When I imported my .PSD file into FCP it kept the white background (alpha channel maybe).
 
There's a section in Layer Effects for glow:

Yea I know where to find it but it wasnt making any adjustments. I had the layer highlighted and I changed all those options and my picture stayed the same. Now about my other questions?
