How to shoot sunrise - intervalometer...

Of course... you have to adjust the exposure constantly.. how often do you adjust?!? and how much?!?

I just tried shooting the sunset this afternoon... during the last 10 mins of the sun setting, i adjust the aperture almost every 1 min. When i saw the playback.. it didn't look smooth. I wonder how to solve that problem.

Tomorrow, i'll be shooting the sunrise... hopefully i would get it right and smoothly.

I'm using HPX300. Please tell me what are your suggestions.

I would:

- Leave the exposure alone. If the sun's going down, let it get dark.

- Or, leave it on auto iris.

DON'T ADJUST THE EXPOSURE
this will make your footage look terrible (under most circumstances). I did see a shot recently that was a 24 hour time laps and it went from sunset to starry night sky back to sunrise. and it looked smooth.

For the most part though don't adjust the exposure once you start the shot. You just have to make your best estimate (as far as if the shot is going to get darker or lighter) and practice often.

BOTTOM LINE: you will not have a properly exposed image the entire duration of the shot (especially while shooting sunrise or sunset) unless you use auto iris (which in my opinion makes it look horrible). and even if you use auto iris you are still rolling the dice as far as getting a properly exposed image.

SO SET THE IRIS AND GO WITH IT.

I've used auto iris to shoot a time lapse of a sunset behind midtown manhattan and it came out looking great. The difference there is that the sun wasn't actually in the shot to mess around with the auto iris, and I wanted the buildings to be visible in the end rather than a bunch of spots of light. But if it was just a typical sunset, I would definitely leave it on manual.

cheers
good luck shooting

That's a pretty incredible video. The time lapse was sweet too. So, you're saying you did not adjust the exposure for this one or that you usually don't? If not the aperture, do you adjust the shutter speed? BTW what camera did you use on that TL?
