how to setup DVX to record from mixer

Okay. I just got my DVX100a and I need help! I'm going to be shooting next week with an ME66 and Sony Lav's running into a Sound Devices MixPre Mixer. I've used this setup on a PD150 before and I would set it up by sending tone from the MixPre to the cam, and then setting the recording level at around -12db.

Now, how do I set this up with the DVX100a, I assume that I do the same, (run tone into cam), but it doesn't seem to have markings on the audio monitor leves on the lower left of the lcd.. just bars... where should I set the level?

Any help or tips for this kind of setup would be MUCH appreciated. Also, I may have to shoot a few scenes without the mixer, just a boome'd me66 right into the cam, any tips for setting this up? where should I put the gain controls for this?

Any other tips for using audio with the DVX? I hear it's got GREAT audio quality.

Thanks!!

Re: how to setup DVX to record from mixer

The bars are made up of dots, and each dot represents 2 dB. The transition from white to red happens at -12dB.

so would you recomend that I send 1khz tone from the mixer and then set the recording level so that the bars are all white, with no red in them. Then don't touch the DVX levels for the duration of the shoot?

Re: how to setup DVX to record from mixer

send 1 tone 0 dbu line level from the mixer -adjust the level on -20dbfs (the 4 white line from the last red ) run the picks on the mixer at +6-+8 at least , it still will give you 12 db of headroom for unexpected loud sond levels , you can open the mixer limmiter in +15 -16 db , if you wont to be more hooly then the pop you can open the limiters on the camera (alc -on -6dbfs start -4.5)
the -12 dbfs reference is not good for dialog recording , usially the picks can be much hier , to run the mixwer low is also not good , the -12 setting used mostly for musick or sourser which where already compreesed

Re: how to setup DVX to record from mixer

thanks! Are you saying that I should set the DVX @ -20db which is 4 bars from the first red bar? I'm confused.
