How to set up the Sennheiser ew112PG with the HPX170 and Mixpre field mixer?

Hey everybody. I just bought the Sennheiser ew112PG wireless transmitter system and I tried hooking the transmitter up to the XLR output on my Sound Devices Mixpre and the receiver up to the XLR input 2 on my HPX170 but, I wasn't getting any sound. I'm sure I missing a step or doing something wrong. Can someone who knows exactly how to hook this wireless system up to the HPX170 help me out and tell me the exact steps to hook everything up? I ended up having to record sound without going wireless today. Thanks. Here is how I set it up:

Rode NTG-3 shotgun mic--> Mixpre XLR balanced input #1--> Mixpre field mixer--> Mixpre XLR balanced output #1--> XLR to 1/8" unbalanced cable--> 1/8" mono to stereo adapter "Y"cable--> 1/8" input on transmitter

Wireless receiver 1/8" output--> 1/8" mono to stereo adapter "Y" cable--> 1/8" to balanced XLR cable--> Microphone input #2 on the HPX170.

Your cables and adaptors are wrong - you are just not connecting it correctly.

To go from the mixer XLR out to the pocket transmitter you need a Sennheiser CL-2 cable (part number 004840). The line-in is only connected to the ring and sleeve of the mini-jack. The tip is the mic. input and is sending out 5v to power the microphone - your method is sending 5V into your mixer and connecting +ve to the mic. i/p and -ve to the line i/p - all totally wrong!

The 112p is delivered with two output cables - one is to mini-jack (this connects to both left and right channels of the recorder) and also an XLR cable (this just connects to one input). So, you just need to use the XLR cable to the camera.

You seem to think that a 3-pole mini-jack = stereo. This is not true at all and these connectors can be wired in several ways.

It's all in the manual that was supplied with the kit.

I hope this sorts it for you.

Thanks, John. I still need to know what cable to get to attach the receiver pack to the female XLR inputs on my HPX170 camcorder. So, I need a cable that is 1/8" mini jack on one end that plugs into the receiver and male XLR on the other end that plugs into the camcorder input. The one that came with the wireless system is exactly what I need except its too short and won't reach from the back of my DV RigPro shoulder camera mount (where the mounting plate with velcro straps to hold the receiver pack is located) to the front of the camcorder where the XLR inputs are. Does anyone make the same exact cable as that one except longer, like 3 feet?

Receiver to camera - either use a short XLR-3F to XLR 3M extension or make your own.

Sennheiser will sell you the lockable 3-pole mini jack.

You wire it to the XLR as follows:-
mini-jack tip to XLR pin-2
mini-jack ring - not connected
mini-jack sleeve to XLR pin 1 which is linked to XLR pin-3.

Hey, I finally figured it out and got it working. One more question. What would you say is the best db setting to have on the transmitter? 0,-06,-12,-18,-21,etc? Is it better to have a higher db setting coming off the field mixer and a quieter db setting on the transmitter like -21? Or a lower db setting coming off the field mixer and a louder db setting on the transmitter like -06?

It's better to have a higher output from the mixer and a lower input on the transmitter.

Thanks, John. Is there a certain decibel level you recommend? Say, -06? -12? Thanks.

Not specifically - use the rule of thumb and find out what works best.

I don't know the o/p lvel of the mixer - but I would expect it to be pro level and the tx i/p would probably be on 0 (minimum gain).

- Feed the MixPre 1000 cycles to the camera and adjust it to -12 dbu
- Talk into the mic at a normal level and adjust the gain in the MixPre
- Talk louder. See if it overloads on camera. If it does, adjust the limiter threshold in the MixPre accordingly.
