How to set up a test

Hi guys,

Lately I've been delving back into some color grading work. It's a ton of fun. Anyway, I've been pondering the subtle differences of color rendition between various film stocks and digital. I figure it's about time I set up some serious tests to help me better match the two mediums.

What I would like to do is test various film stocks for spectral response, color shifts in under/overexposure and saturation limits. Testing for color shifts with exposure differences is easy. Simply set up a macbeth color chip chart and shoot some frames at various exposures, scan 'em and cpmpare the results in photoshop.

Spectral response and saturation limits are more difficult and I'm not entirely sure what the best way to approach this would be.

The only thing I can think of for testing saturation limits is to get a physical chart which has the maximum saturated colors visible to the human eye, shoot that and compare the results to what they should theoretically be. Problem is that this is pretty much impossible with printing and dying processes....

As for spectral response... I'm strumped.

Anyone have recommendations? Is it possible to get this information online from the stock manufacturers? Am I going about this all wrong? I've seen some data on gamma response but can't seem to locate anything now that it might prove useful :furious3: (go figure).

Hmm well, I found quite a bit of what I needed. Still need to find a way to test for saturation limits and exposure hue shifts though...
