How to scout locations?

A local band and I have decicded to do a music video together. Just doing it pro bono to learn/have fun with it/ see what comes out of it.

The thing is having good production value is key, so how do I find some interesting locations to shoot at? Just start posting on craigslist and stuff? We have a few options for the song but Im thinking if we find a place first we can pick a song and build a short video around that. More of a performance piece since we can't put much money into it. Just to see what we can do with it.

They are in the Chicago area.... Anyone have little ideas or sparks of ideas that I could run with?

Depends on the band; what type of music do they play? Do you want to be outdoors in the sun, or inside in the shadows. If there is no budget for locations, definitely hit Craigslist.

thats true.

And if you are doing it for free, you definitely don't want to have to rent anything out...do you have some cool looking abandoned wharehouses? Old Train Yards? Open Fields? Building Tops?....

Thanks for the input... They play rock ( synthrock ) Its gettin pretty cold here now so outside shooting is out really. 9 mile... is that south of 7mile? lol I know where 7 mile road is... Im gonna hit up craigslist to see if any people are willing to donate a space for an afternoon. Or I could try some old abondoned places if i can find one...
