How to remove a filter thats possibly cross threaded?

I just tried to remove a uv filter off my old canon gl1 and its not budging, so I am guessing its cross threaded.
Can anyone tell me how to go about removing it without harming the the camera lens threading if thats possible?

Cool the lens, then warm the filter with your hands. Then apply a very thin light weight strap wrench and remove the filter. Hopefully it has damaged the filter threads and not the lens.

My two cents;
Remove the filter glass from the filter housing, it is possible to do and what you end up with is something with threads in tact. If you try and remove the cross threaded filter from the camera you may end up with a camera that will not accept filters anymore, my way just extends your camera by about 3 or 4 mm.

Just to add, I have done this with a Tiffen filter I use on my HVX. Use the pointers of a caliper measuring device, you know the thing that you use to measure the widths of metals or stuff like that, I think the also go by the name Micrometer. Either way the have the ability to spread to the width you need and you use them like a wrench to gently twist out the lock ring that holds the glass in place. Hope this helps.

You can also try wrapping a rubber band around the filter. Gives you a better grip. Worked for me. Chances are it's just stuck not cross-threaded.

Try using a rubber glove.
This is the wisest choice, it works everytime. I had a friend who had a stepup ring stuck to a WA. Told him to use a glove, he laughed. I took a glove around to him and did it in front of him, of course it worked, he'd tried all these other silly things to no avail.
