How to record or simulate an iphone screen?

So, I'm not sure if this is old hat, but I've had trouble finding it.

Maybe I'm not searching the right terms.

I'm making a web video for an iphone and android app and need to show some shots of the app in action.

I'm just left wondering the best way to do this?

What I came across are a bunch of programs you can get if your iphone is jailbroken?

The methods I can think of are splitting and somehow recording the screen, which some of those apps seem to be able to do.

Or the other option seems to be overlaying video on top of the screen.

If I went the second route, I would have to make those videos of the app in aftereffects?

Any insight or points to the right direction would really be appreciated.

If you're on a compatible Apple system you should be able to find an emulator or virtual machine that can display the app, which could then be made functional through macros. I'm sure the developers have this setup in their office. Then you just need screen capture software in the background. That's if you want full screen and shots of the phone itself aren't acceptable.

Don't make it After Effects. Even if you got it really accurate you'd be implying to the viewers that they're seeing the product in action when in reality they're seeing motion graphics you put together, which could come back to haunt you if something doesn't match.

I've seen it done both in a studio on a white background, lit the same as the old iPhone ads with the screen and hand. Look almost identical apart from the chromatic abberation from the cheaper lens that was used. I've also seen iPhones being shot with green on the screen and then compositing the app in post.

From what I've seen a lot of the iPhone-type ads that don't actually have hands in them are done completely in post - ie even the phone itself is a high quality 3D model. Whether they create the app footage in AFX or screen capture it, I'm not sure - I'm pretty sure app developers get access to computer-based phone emulators that they could use to screen capture.
