how to prepare film for Foley/ADR?

so I need to prepare an RFP for soundfx and sound engineering for my film. the video is about 100% locked. I've just been using my printed script to scribble notes about what soundfx I'd like where, etc.

can someone shed more light on what this process should/will be like? I want to be as prepared as possible. Is there software I should use?

btw, if any of you do this type of work and live in NY/NJ area, i'd love to also send you this RFP when I'm done.

thanks in advance guys!!

realized i had only scratched the surface with my post. any other tips about how i should prepare for sound treatment?? I have the whole film editing in Premiere Pro 2. will i just be handing over master ppro 2 file with all video footage?

thanks for any insight you might have!!

Pro Tools is generally regarded as the industry standard for audio post-production, so you'll likely need to export the audio timeline into a Pro Tools-friendly format. OMF is typically the best route for that. I don't know whether Premiere Pro has inbuilt OMF support, but I think Automatic Duck makes a third-party OMF export plugin.

Basically, give your sound editor OMFs to their specifications (10-30 second handles on all audio files is a good start). They'll reorganize the tracks and proceed to smooth out the dialogue and add effects.

Meanwhile, the dialogue editor will help you evaluate the dialogue tracks, reccomending where you may need ADR. Make up a detailed ADR script (Filemaker Pro is good for this) that has the individual lines (large font, easy to read in dim light) organized by character, with a start and end timecode for every line. As long as you stay well organized, the ADR sessions will be much more enjoyable.

If you have to make further changes to your picture edit after the sound editors start up, make sure you provide them with a very detailed change list. "Before" and "after" EDLs will also help speed up the audio conform proccess.

Once your sound editor has all the elements together (dialogue, ADR, foley, effects, music) you can start pre-mixing everything, then moving everything onto the dubbing stage.

What Smuir said. Does PP had AAF output capabilities? If so that will work instead of OMF but if not you will need Automatic Duck.

Cheers

Nice stuff Mark. Just looked at some of your clips. Be prepared for a helluva lot of Foley too! I'd take a look at your request for proposal but I am SLAMMED, and I live in the Hollywood SF Bay area corridoor. : (

I can give you defferal of a house I work with that does it all (although I'm not sure they do Foley).

PM me.

hey wabbit (and the rest),

Premiere Pro 2 does have an "Export Project as AAF..." option. I'm gonna ask my sound designer/engineer if that'll work. I've been reading on the net about OMF and AAF's, thanks to your guys' suggestions. I see that OMF embeds all the audio information while AAF's just link to, and thus also require, the original audio footage.

I've seen that Automatic Duck seems to have discontinued the Pro Export application for Premiere Pro that would allow for OMF export. Anyone know why? Adobe's online store still sells version 1 of the program, but it does not explicitly say that the plugin can be used with PP 2- only PP1.

I also read on Adobe's site that After Effects Professional for Windows can export to OMF format. non-pro and mac versions can't. Anyone else confirm that? It sucks cuz i have non-prof version for PC and all my pro owning friends are on macs...argh!

yo, thanks again for all the help!

I just reread your original post, Mark, and thought of something else that will help streamline the post proccess: make sure that all the notes you take include timecode references. This is especially true if your locked picture edit differs significantly from the script version upon which you've been making notes.

Try emailing Wes Plate directly (you can find it with google). Although he is an extremely busy guy, he would very likely be able to set you up with something or point you to a good PP workflow.

Cheers
