How to paint part of a frame

I've got a very brief scene where a girl opens a trunk. The trunk, wooden and old, is empty. The trunk is magical, so I was thinking of painting it black or something like that. Any suggestions? How would I go about doing this in FCP? Do I use Motion?

Well it depends- what do you want to see in there? Do you just not want to see the inside? You could do that in Motion or with Color or even with FCP. Depends how much movement is in the shot and whether anything crosses in front of it. You could also add some particle animation or track something else cool in there. What's the story point?

Yes, I think at this point I want the trunk to look like a void. Her arms cross in front of it a couple of frames before the above one - she opens the trunk, and then when she "falls" her arms are above the "black void" part of the trunk. But if it's too hard to deal with her arms over the void, I can not show those frames. How would I get started on this? (besides watching more lynda.com tutorials - what a great site)

Basically in Motion create a matte around the inside of the chest. Then you can darken that area with a filter. Then use Motion Tracking behavior to follow the painted area around as the shot moves. I have a tutorial here that gives a long-winded explanation on how motion tracking an element works:

Particle animation? Tracking??? Those sound super cool... I'm afraid I don't know what they are. I better go and read up on Motion. Story point: the trunk makes her forget her memories. She goes into this cabin, opens the trunk, and then falls back like dead. We don't see what happens to her in this scene, but the next scene has her talking to other people, so hopefully it becomes clear that she's forgotten her memories and didn't just die of a massive heart attack.

edit: Thanks for the info!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Again not knowing the full story but less is more. Particle effects and junk might be eye catching but maybe not the best for story. Maybe it's more interesting if you edit it so that you don't see the trunk open in the overhead angle but only see the girl's reaction and do a cool sound effect. Excellent cinematography btw.
