How to motivate actors to be better?

Getting the best out of your actors shouldn't require any pampering...there will always be a mixed bag of personalities but the casting is crucial to keeping a happy family...I have often gone with my second choice (performance wise) because I felt that I would never like to be in a project with the first choice...look for great team players that fit the bill wherever possible and you should have a co operative bunch...you need to have the respect of your actors more so than you need to pamper them...the right actors understand that they must be malleable to the director so know your job, be prepared and create a professional and positive environment for them.

From a more technical perspective, line readings are rarely necessary, and a good director should have 2 things. One, a vision that he can communicate clearly to the cast: and two, he or she should create a platform for the actor to create...open a window in their mind rather than tell them what to do so that they can offer something creative to add to the process. That's usually where the magic is...where the writer, the director and the actor all bring something to the process.

Many directors ask these kinds of questions because too many schools or tutorials do not spend enough time with the acting process...kind of sad but true.
