how to minimize wind noise

Most everyone I know that has tried the Windpac pretty much hated it. Loved it for blocking the wind (though apparently they never were able to get it to block the 60MPH winds that they claim to block), but hated pretty much everything else about it, including storage, and build quality.

It says it protects to up to 85 MPH, but who is shooting in that kind of heavy wind and not doing ADR. Or if have money, not doing a studio shoot. I can think of a rare occasion like a documentary on the cliffs of Mohr or something but ....

they all seem scary expensive - has anyone tried making one themselves with some fake fur or foam rubber?

I found some stuffed animals in a thrift store, took the "fur" off and sewed up a sleeve for my 416. But this kind of thing isn't much good unless you blimp it, I guess. I was still getting wind noise in very mild winds.

I am trying to record sound from a wireless lapel (ew 100 g2)of someone talking whilst riding a push bike, I have brought the sensitivity down but does anyone have any idea of how to make the wind protection better?

kris also lots of techniques and some lavs are just more succeptible to wind noise. If you are using the stock lav from the g2 you could stand to upgrade anyways. Do a search for lav placement and you can learn alot of great places to hide a lav.

Thanks a lot,
I am fairly new to this video game, i have been spending a lot of time shooting and then editing. I am finding that it is easier said than done o get it right.
The sound really bugs me when it is not right, the lav mike especially seems to blow very easily. How would the upgrade affect the sound, would you suggest anything.
I don't trust the sales people, they all seem to be concerned with taking as much money as possible off you as quickly as possible.
I am finding that the only way to know is to shoot it watch the results and then re do it. Lav placement is crucial as the actors seem to be going for the mic with their hands all the time (not professional actors) and it is a real pain in the ass.
There is so much to learn i am really enjoying it.

Depends on the store - I think most of the "real" audio stores like Trew and Coffey would steer you in the right direction. The lavs that come with the g2's are just muddy and have a poor sound to them for me. I've briefly used some wired with sanken cos-11's and the difference was night and day - sanken had so much more body and clarity - like going from high def to standard. From listening to side by sides of the "good" lavs any of them will sound better than the me2/4 that you are using by a fair bit. Wind noise is a problem though - I'd experiment with mic placement and blocking that oncoming wind as much as possible - also might want to try some creative taping, or some of the rycote sticky things. As for the actors touching them, just get a big stick and hit them everytime they do it. I threatened to tape a guys arms in his chair one day as he kept playing with his tie that had the lav clipped to it... Was a corporate thing so the lav in the shot wasnt a problem but moving the tie around alot was... Yep theres alot to learn and I barely know anything, seems alot comes from experience, so go make some experiences :)

Thanks jdajda,
I am off to Trew right now, 6km from my home. I will be sure to bug them a bit.
I found from buying lenses that when you first start that any lens looks good but as time goes by you start to see the problems and understand why you pay the top dollar for the professional grade stuff.
I am at the newbie stage with mic's they all sound great to me at the moment, am working on understanding the nuances as quick as possible.
With photography everybody is caught up with "megapixels" when in reality they mean very little there are far more important things to be concerned about than the body. Like top quality lenses .
I feel that with video everybody is worried about 24p when good sound and image control is more important. am i on the right track with this way of thinking about hardware.
thanks K
