How To Make This Effect?

You may have seen the commericals that appear "cartoon" like or like a coloring book, in that just basic colors appear.............sorta like a high res posterizing effect.

Seems they may have used the "outline" effect, and then added color frame by frame, but Im sure that would have been too labor intensive.

In other words, it's real video, but with basic colors to look cartoon like.

Im wondering how this is achieved.

Not exactly what you're looking for but the movie "A Scanner Darkly" is the same thing I believe. Searching on that may lead to something that works. The introduction on this page tells a bit about how they did it.

Digital Anarchy (digitalanarchy.com) sells a plug-in called ToonIt that with give you that effect. You can download a demo.

Maybe an option if you have access: FCP6 (FC Studio 2) has an effect built in that can do this to a degree that may suit you. 'Sketch' effect

Yeah...Toonit software may do the trick, but at $300.
I will try to posterize, then use the "sketch" effect in PP2 to see how that looks, before purchasing ToonIT.

Havent installed the demo yet, should get around to it soon. You might want to try the demo, a fully functional demo...but with a watermark X.

I got a similar effect by playing around with the posterizing effect in PP2, and using a lot of color saturation.

I've said it in other threads, but I've seen a similar effect in photoshop. If you can do the effect in photoshop (will try later as now i'm curious too), you can render a photoshop sequence in AE and batch the .psd in PS. I haven't tried it, but give me a few hrs :evil:
