How to make person appear on screen twice?

I'm not sure what's the proper term for this technique, but maybe someone can give me a hand on this.

I'm going to do an interview scene where you will be able to see interviewee and a bit off to the side you will see the back of the interviewer. However, the interviewee and interviewer will be the same person.

How would I go about shooting this technique?

And how would I go about it when I edit it on Vegas?

Thanks in advance.

Since you're only seeing the interviewer from the back and side, why not just cast and dress someone who can pass for the same person, when shot from that angle?

Doing it in-camera will save you a great deal of work.

Otherwise, you might consider shooting your interviewer (seen from behind) against a green screen, shooting your interviewee (seen from the front) without the interviewer in-frame, and composite the two together in AE, Premiere, or Vegas, if Vegas does that sort of thing.

The easiest way is to film the scene twice with the camera locked off. 1st time have the character in the right half of the screne and 2nd time on the left half.

Then in post you just split screen it like when you see phone conversations in films. It's easy with todays editing systems. Just make sure no legs or feet cross the centerline of frame or they will be cut off.

Agreed. This includes locking all your camera settings manually (exposure, gain, focus and white balance). If any of these drift during either take, the split will become noticeable.

Locked off = making sure all knobs and levers are tight and the camera is not going to drift. Be sure not to accidently bump the tripod either as that may change your shot too.

When I first read your post I thought you were referring to how to show 2 shots of the same person on screen at the same time! I think there are a number of ways to do that. I remember seeing a music video years ago where there singer was up close to the camera then in the background you see the same singer running up some stairs! I remember saying to myself how in the world did they do that! LOL!!! The magic of video editing and the way things are shot is how they pulled it off! LOL!

Easy using the Premiere Pro: just shoot the two scenes with identical settings without moving the camera or lights. Place take 1 on the first video track and take 2 on the second track. Drag the crop effect to track 2. Adust the crop on one side so that the split comes to the right place (shown as % of the width of frame). The upper track 2 covers the lower track 1 partly and seamlesly.

I got that impression as well.
