How to make it rain on set?

I have a scene which I would like to have it rain, in a controlled manner. Are there machines that can do this? Is it feasible moneywise? If it can be done what is the equipment called where would I rent it in Los Angeles? Thanks

if you want rain and you want to control it you'll use a rain tower.

If the shot is close enough a water hose with sprayer attachment, aimed in an arc, works fine.

In Rob Zombie's Halloween 1, they used a waterhose. So it's used on all sorts of sets.

You can also composite some real rain filmed against blackness. They do this with snow often, which is often pretty easy to tell. With rain it's harder, as long as you match focal lengths, depth of field, etc.

If you go the water hose route, make sure you keep the hose operator happy... he or she could make life difficult.. :happy:

we asked fireman-squad to help us, and they did it for 1oo bucks and couple of beers..

for rain on the cheap- useful for mids and CUs, esp when its raining before scene starts.

use a mains hosepipe, running up to to a horizontal pipe (suspended on whatever poles you've got around, but make it steady). puncture pipe with various sized holes and then add brush/bristles (the thick short black stuff they have round doors sometimes) to vary the flow even more. send water through pipe to make a curtain of rain.

put curtain between camera and actors, turn on hose and pray for water pressure, wet actors with watering can and shoot.

then be nice to the sound guy who will convince everyone with his fancy foley.

this worked surprisingly well for me
