How to make good car crash

I am shooting a shortfilm where there is a huge car accident just in the begining.
We have permission to shoot on this road, and i have found a very good turn where a car could perfectly crash.
Now what i am trying to find inspiration is in how the car could crash/fly.
The best example i have found is the crash that we see at end of fast and the furious. Now forget the toyota and the truck, and imagine the truck being the slope of the mountain. A car could perfectly use it as a springboard and fly some meters before falling with energy.

Here is a picture of the site:

anyone with any good idea of a crash? Also as the script is note yet very detailed in this point, i need to find a reason why the driver looses control and hits the mountain.

Re: How to make good car crash

What if he sees some sort of shady person in the road, and swerves to try and avoid them? Either that, or maybe an animal?

Re: How to make good car crash

just outa curiousity, how are u preparing for this crash?

u have permision to use the road? from who? do the know ur hurling a car all over it, possibly damaging the rails etc? Do u have a professional stunt driver? do u have a rescue screw on site? an ambulence? is the road blocked so no traffic can interfere?

if this is legit and u have these things covered then cool, awesome, but shooting something like this with dvx, i cant help but be a little suspicious, and then to here that ur script isnt really finished, i just wanna make sure ur not a couple of teenagers wanting to make bad boys 3.

:-/

Then whats the problem? :)

I can't believe someone in the highway dept. will let you take out a guard rail, etc... that cost big money to replace, clean up the wreck, oil, glass , etc....anyways, have the car hit the bank as shown, flip over, tumble & roll off the edge. The Driver simply looses control.

Of course to do this takes a pro to plan & execute, using remote steering, etc....so good luck it's beyond me.

You can always try throwing a fake dummy off some freeway overpass on the 110 or 405. That's a guaranteed accident money shot! :)

Sure, i will upload the car accident scene. We will be shooting in 20 days.

A stunt driver will do the approach. He will hit the brakes and since the car has no ABS it will block the wheels loosing control and going directly to the mountain.

A stunt company is enabling an air compressed device which will make the car jump around 5 meters up and away with nobody in the car.

We will have about 6 cameras rolling from different angles including one inside the car.

However I still do not have the reason why the car hits the brakes in the middle of the curves.

Bye

How about the Hitchcock method of 'less is more.' Remember you don't have to show a spectacular crash as long as the audience thinks that they are seeing a spectacular crash...

Allow me to elaborate. I read somewhere that in Fight Club, censors, (or maybe it was just producers,) commented that some of the violence, (particularly Angel Face's beating) needed to be taken out, some of the actual shots of him being hit. The test audiences hadn't said much about it, however, when they took the actual shots of contact out and used cut-aways, (reactions, blood splatter, etc.) people reffered to it as disturbing. Sometimes if you don't show everything you allow peoples minds to run rampant(sp?) and ultimately have better results.

Don't know if this helped, but good luck with however you decide to do it!

Gumby has a good point on how sometimes less is more.

Perfect example... "Seabiscuit"
When the son dies in the car accident. They showed none of that. But you knew it would happen and you knew it did happen.

Another example... American Graffiti.
At the end, you know there was to be a car accident. Most likely fatal.

To hell with it, I say do the crash!! You've gotten permission, you have professional stunt people coordinating/executing the stunt, and you've got plenty of coverage. Why NOT do it??

Now, to get back to the original point of this thread, WHY? That's really hard to answer without some context to place it in. I mean we don't know the story, we don't know the character or what he's going through, what is character arc is, where he's driving from, where he's driving to.... Ya know?

I'm assuming the crash is an important part of the story, otherwise you wouldn't bother going to the time and expense of filming it, so why is it important to the story? Is it just that you need the physical repercussions for your character (The Long Kiss Goodnight), or is there a deeper meaning to it?

If you're doing it just for the sake of doing it, well, then I vote for distraction due to erotic stimulation via a female passenger...

Matt

Well. The car accident is the begining of the shortfilm. It needs to be there since the story lies on the death of one of the passengers and the lost of memory of another.

Anyhoo... I wasn't saying don't do the crash at all, I was just commenting on the fact that... ah hell, the bigger the better, yay explosions. If it's the begining would that mean that it's remembered in flashbacks? Perhaps you could incorporate something/someone from the body of the script to cause the crash, maybe it's something important that we don't know or understand until later in the script, maybe I'm just going off on too many tangents...

I'm having too much fun with this.
