How to make a cheap Rycote windscreen kit for under $150

Excelent post, Now for the rest of the story ;~)

DV City Zeppelins And Lyre suspensions .

I may do this myself for a shotgun I have sitting around I almost never use.

And here is a place to get the conbox also.

I did basically the same thing with my strange stereo mount by dedicating some short XLRs and using zip ties to isolate them. But I did it because I couldn't find any decent thin flexible cable to make a conbox equivalent with.

It's almost as good, but I would opt for the ConBox if you can.

Thanks for supplying the links. I didn't know if you could include them in the forum... I agree the connbox is great but I was trying to keep the cost low.. Also I use to just use a rubber band to hold it from moving.. If you have the money get the connbox. It will save your butt many times on fast paced shoots..

Do you guys know how this compares to the rode? It says BMP40 is 8lbs here but I'm not sure if that is operating weight. The rode is unruly heavy and noisy compared to the rycote 600$ set up. It doesn't look like I could use the rycote lyres for the rode either. Do you guys no for sure?
thanks

The Rycote "Lyre" is the best suspension by far. It doesn't drop or bounce like elastic suspensions and has the greatest flexibility in the plane where it's needed.

I think you will find that the Rycote S-series is cheaper than the Rode and also a lot lighter. The S-series is not quite as good as a full Rycote basket, but personally, I would go that way rather than a cheaper basket from another manufacturer.

Talking to various people at Rycote over the years has shown me that they really understand the science behind shock absorption and wind protection so that wind protection is high with the absolute minimal effect on the sound quality and frequency response, a good understanding of materials so that the the windshields last even under adverse conditions (and a good selection of spares if you really break them) and are made with the user in mind for lightness and ease of use.
