how to light for a certan effect

Hates to Rent
I want to duplicate a shot where the whole room is dark, but only the person's eyes or mouth is lit up by a shaft of light, obscuring the rest of their face.

How to do it?
 
Turn out the lights. Use a small light that has barn doors. Use flags if necessary to keep the light from spilling onto the background. Angle the light from below or above a bit, so any spilling light is not in the frame.
 
Along with Joshua's very good suggestion, you could add a grid to the front of the light to further control the size and shape of the shaft of light.
 
Or experiment with a "cookie" (cucaloris) with some different kinds of cutouts that gives the effect your looking for...
