How to light a shot to make it look like it's night time?

Hey, I was wondering how some of you guys like to light a room to make it look like it's the middle of the night? Do you use blue gels, change the cameras white balance, or do it in post? Any tips or tricks you like using? I'm about to shoot my first night scene next week and any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Some might suggest you start by lighting as you normally would minus any fill light.
I certainly agree with lighting with more contrast but I like to add rim lights to edge out the characters.

If it's an interior it may be helpful to light as though there's a full moon behind some trees so you get dappled hard light scattered throughout the set. Start there and see where you end up.

I find it VERY helpful to use a waveform monitor on night scenes so I can see exactly where my levels are. It's easy to get faked out by a monitor.
