How to improve the voice clarity in a documentary...

Hi,

Im working on a short docu movie. And the voice alone seems to be slightly low in level causing people not to be able to hear the narrator. Theres music too in the background. How can i improve the voice levels alone. I used the TRACK FX button on the track panel and there are 3 basic filters preadded. I deactivated Noise Gate and Compressor. I went into EQ and made some adjustments around the mid levels. The values show as Freq (Hz) = 231, Gain (db) = 8.5, Bandwidth (oct) = 1.3.

But im no expert when it comes to sound. Can you suggest what levels would be good or where do i start to improve this aspect of the video ?

Thanks

Wait, you recorded the music and voice at the same time? If not, download the trial or Soundforge, or if you have the full version, and open the music file and voice file seperately. Amp up the voice, down out the music. Export, Import into Vegas and BAM!

oR IN vEGAS, JUST TOOL WITH THE Db slider on the left of the track.

Is all the audio on separate tracks?

Each track needs to be compressed, and the narration needs to have the living crap compressed out of it (and gated too).

A limiter needs to be put on the master audio track.

Instead of EQing the narration by boosting, cut the music EQ in the frequencies that the narration uses. Carve a hole in it, so to speak.

Its an already existing docu-style corporate video on a glass factory. Its an already existing video that someone made for them. They want me to shorten it and spruce it up a lil. So all i have is a stereo track. The music and voice etc are all in the same stereo track. But fortunately theres no loud music etc in the back. Mostly theres only voice and nothing else with just some mild sounds in the background. The music is just slow cello harps and stuff like that. Very mellow stuff. But when we play it on a professional PA system its sort of muddy in the voice area.

Pmark > Given my decription above what do u suggest i do ? Can you explain the last line alone a lil clearly please ?

Thanks a lot.
