How to hand over project to color grade with 3-party plugins?

Hi guys,

I'm a bit confused about the correct way to hand over projects!

This is the scenario:

I am the grader, and the editor needs to hand me projects for color grading. Now, this editor have and uses a few third party plugins that I do not have.
Is there any way to get around this problem? I guess it works the other way around as well, because if he deactivate the plugins, and I colorgrade and hand him the project back he don't have my grading programs.
Furthermore, I will be the one rendering the final project to clients, not the freelance editor.

He used some dynamic linking to After Effects as well, and these files dosen't work at all, even though the projects are included...
Very annoying and time consuming.

So, how do you do this, the easiest way? The third party plugins are a bit of a mess and the dynamic link sequences are causing a bit of trouble as well! :(

Thanks in advance!

The easiest way is for him to render the video into a losless format and give you that. You grade and render and hand it back.

Thank you Chris. So he render it out as one big file?
Auch - this music video with 100 cuts is going to be pure pain to grade! Is that really the way?

What grading programs are you using? At the moment, Chris's method is the best practice for this unless you want to invest in getting the plugins he has.

Right now i'm using Looks and Colorista, and these are pretty common but i'm seriously considering to move to Resolve, but the workflow is keeping me back at the moment!

It's a bit of a surprise that it is actually the best practice. It seems like loads of unwanted work! Of cause it depends on the project, but I mainly do music videoes and they are, as you know, often a bit hectic in the editing! ;)

General professional practice is to CC and Grade the files as per edit..then apply FX .

Eg .
Edit in NLE..
CC/grade original source footage in Resolve
Conform / composite and add fx in Flame or NLE.

Use an XML / EDL workflow between apps.

Digital Intermediates can simplify the process.
