How to get this background?

Hard to tell from that clip but it looks like a light/gel on the background, with the key flagged off.

It could very well be a Source Four with a colored glass Pattern.

It's pretty hard to light something black. :)

I frequently shoot studio photos using white background paper and by simply setting the distance between my subject and background its actually possible to make a white paper background come out "grey" or dark grey all depending on how much light I allow to hit it.

If I were recreating this look I would use a muslin background more in the mid-tone range (grey or brown/grey) and green gels on two focused light sources shaped with the barn doors, or even better yet a home-made snoot using black foil.

I'd also keep the background 15-20 feet behind the subject which does several things:

- Allows you to shoot f8-f11 for a razor sharp subject and still get a slightly out of focus/soft background on a larger sensor format camera
- keeps your green gel light from showing up on your talent as hair light (go watch the youtube video again and you can actually see the green gel light lighting both sides of the first man shown in the interview - tisk tisk)
- Again because of the distance between your subject and the background your key light on your subject will be very low in intensity by the time it reaches that background. Remember to make a "grey" background show up "black" on-camera all you need to do is ensure that you have a high enough lighting ratio between your background and foreground subject.

You can also use grids on your subject key light to further reduce the amount of stray light from reaching your background if needed, incase perhaps you don't have such a huge room to work with.

They may have shot them on green screen and put it back there in post. Or had a white background underexposed with a black wrap snoot or gobo and green gel on the light to get that shape.

With the awful youtube compression it's hard to tell.

Actually, if they did shoot it green screen, it would be easy to do a partial key and leave that BG shape there so you actually keep part of your green screen in the shot, just dial it down.
