how to get these old school looks

Hi everyone! First post here. I'm wondering if anyone knows how to achieve these looks, with filters or otherwise.

I've seen a few pieces recently that use this "trail" effect where the image of the person duplicates / expands behind them. It has a very retro feel, but how is it really done? Especially if they aren't shooting on green screen?

Another look I've wanted to get is the second picture attached. A kind of video feedback, where the image fades into an RGB ghost of itself. Also very analog looking. We've all seen this when a tape is ejected from a deck.

Hopefully the pictures will explain what I'm looking to do better than I have.
Thanks for your creative input!!

There are filters that emulate the person "echoing" thing, but it obsiously effects the whole image, so I would roto is the only way that I can think of to isolate someone and pull the effect off.

For the second image, just mess around with channels, inverting, slamming yuor RGB levels every which way and whatever you can to get that look.

Search for "tunnel" & "repeat" name effects. Something like that. Those effects are produced from old A/B roll editing hardware, from the FX module though.

Screw after effects. Do this instead.

1. Have your "A" camera shooting your scene and plug it into a television that's at least 30 years old. How you get it attatched is your problem. On each side of the television place a 5lb earth magnet to get that distorted color effect.

Point your "B" Camera directly at the television screen making sure you zoom in enough so you don't see the television box in your lens.

Now here is the tricky part.
Using what's left over from you petty cash, hire a drunken derelict to come in and piss all over the back of the television set (try and get him to aim for the air holes or just take the whole back off of the set) while both cameras are operational.

With a little practice, you too will have that video feedback look you desire and you won't have to waste time searching out pesky plugins for AE.

Good luck.

You could check your local public access studios for old equipment. I've recently been using a lot of the formerly taboo cheesy effects of yesteryear cause I find them cool again. Most places have the old video toasters and other fx boards. Or find some place going out of biz. The place where Puffy taped the 1st Making The Band was a real production company building with lots of broadcast equipment. I bartended next door. When they went out of biz they were selling everything for pennies. I got a Sony monitor for $40. You can find those old fx boxes at auction all over the place. I catered in the TimeWarner building and they were throwing out 3/4" Sony decks. Or you could use AE which is how I came across your post.

That's actually a great idea and goes well with my instructions.

Just remember...never point a 3/4 inch camera at the lights. It's not cool.

Wouldn't you need an Amiga to run an old Video Toaster box?
