How to get that 'VHS' look

Here is an interesting question.

If anyone has ever seen some of the SNL digital shorts or Tim & Eric Awesome Show, then you may be familiar with certain segments that have a wonderful 90's look and appear to be shot on VHS. How could one replicate this in post? I have a DVX which replicates a 4:3 image like most VHS camcorders of the day but what else can I do in post and in camera to get that grainy, washed out, and sometimes static-y image of old?

What about mimicking tape wear and tear where you can see the picture distort and scramble like over used VHS tapes often would ?

Here are some great (and hilarious) examples:

I would just output to VHS and then damage the tape (but not to the point that its so damaged that it doesn't play) capture back again, :) might degrade the quality enough.

I love it.

One poster wants to fix up some VHS images so they look good

The other wants to mess up some good images to look like VHS.

I suggest you guys swap tapes.

LMAO !, shooter i was thinking the same thing.

guess video editing and flavor has no bounds.

but it reaffirms that "what is old will come around again, just wait long enough"
