How to get grain effects

One of the art directors on a pre-viz shoot wants a setup to be very dim with lots of grain. The scene won't have much if any action other than the two talents, turning to look at each other.

I'm planning on using 2 Arri 150's (key and hair), scrimmed way down, & shooting 24p. But what other settings should I use to get the most grain?

Thanks, Bill

You want ugly grain? Sure, use the "gain" option heh. Set that fool up to 18decibals stop down to f/22 loose some resolution and have yourself one of the most blotchy films of the twenty first century. I kid of course.. Ok well if you are the cinematographer i do not see why you are listening to your Art Director anyway. If you are shooting film that is a different bag, you can shoot higher sensitivity film and end up with grainy shots. Now as the gurus made clear a while back that DVX has a stable ISO of 640, the only thing i see that is possible to increase the sensitivity(in cam of course) is the gain option but if what you are aiming for is "film grain" then this one is not for you. Gain is just simply electronical pixel ugly grain ew. On this one i am clueless but of course there are tons of post pro work you can apply to simulate that effect, i will just leave that for someone else.

Good points. I will try stopping down and adding the grain in Vegas. The reason I have to listen to the AD is because they are paying the bill. ;D

Thanks, Bill
