How to get clean exports to DVD?

I'm editing in Avid and I'm having the hardest time finding the best export method to get the cleanest possible DVD's. Everything I've done so far including Mpeg-2, Quicktime Reference, etc, has made the DVD's look muddy, and then tend to have a lot of artifacting, and jitter. Could anybody suggest how I could get the highest quality output to DVD. Any response is appreciated.

i had a rap concert that lasted an hour and four minutes. was able to get a clean export with menus and all. there was a drop frame or two but that was a capturing eror i believe. my workflow is basic (meaning not expensive) but pretty effective:
-shooting w/ standard pulldown and editing on a 1gb 12in. powerbook i capture the footage into avid express pro 4.6 using a 29.9xxx timeline so i have the option to digicut as i have no mojo (oh, behave!).
-i export from avid using a quicktime reference file (qt7pro). deselect the avid codec thing as well as the "same as source" option and keep the digital mastering option selected (i believe its the default) i had to modify some settings in qt under the "show movie properties" because the fields were weird looking. i switch it to single field under visual settings for the video track selected.
-maybe its because my axp is educ., but i couldnt add markers for skipping through the opening scts so i imported the movie into iMovie, added markers and imported it into iDVD. i guess iDVD automatcally encodes it to MPEG-2 because i have yet to find options for compression unless i am in QT7 (i've only been using iDVD 5 for 3 weeks though). i have toast 6 titanium but it seemed to slowing down my DVD self tutorial and iDVD was much easier to use. it is now compatible w/ external burners as i use a Lacie D2 DVD+/-rw (nope, didnt get a superdrive w/powerbook). burned on a dvd-r disc and it played on my laptop and in a 6 year old sony dvd player (but its a sweet one though).
Overall, there was a slight color dropoff, just as any Mercedes looks best the first day off the lot, but its still a Benz, you dig?

What apps are you using for compression and authoring?

In Avid, I've always exported as a Quicktime reference file (step #1), and then on to compression...

But as far as a "clean export," Quicktime reference is good.
