How to get a Location?

So I've found the perfect location for a film I'm currently in pre-pro on. But how do I convince the owners to let us film there? It's a house that's currently on the market (for sale). Any ideas? I don't even know how to get in contact with the owner.

The realtor on the property is no help.

Check the register of deeds office to find out who owns the property. Or write a letter and send it to the property address -- it will most likely get forwarded to the owner.

Meantime, start looking for other suitable locations, just in case this one doesn't pan out. Good luck!

Just on a side note.
Locations are THE biggest pain in the rear of the entire low/micro budget process. It causes the most stress, requires the most work, etc...

When you are a major player and can walk in with a cashiers check for a couple grand and proof of your 10 million dollar liability policy I imagine it goes much smoother.

In the context of this thread - if I want to shoot somewhere (for something Im doing of my own back and not being paid for), I dont want to pay for the location if I can avoid that. But to the second point you make - liability insurance. It does make it easier.

That's the point. It's the production triangle (good - fast - cheap, you can only pick two) at work as always. Finding free locations sucks, really, really bad. Hell, finding locations you can get for a few hundred dollars sucks really, really bad. The only time finding locations stops sucking is when you can walk in with a big fat production budget and pay whatever it takes within reason. That's the day I look forward to.. a lot.
