My locations is a forrest at night., I want it foggy or smokey. How would I go about doing this..? Any advice would be great.

Get a couple of $40 "party fogger" fog machines, pray that there's no wind, and fog the living hell out of your scene. That's what we did for "Unawakening". Actually we did Unawakening with one fog machine. And we fogged a lot. I think at one point we were fogging up about a hundred feet across and 20 feet high, to get the wall of orange fog you see at one point with him in the forest...

Then, back-light the fog, and be prepared to constantly maintain it. Hence why I say get two fog machines, there's nothing worse than needing to spruce up the fog and finding out that the machine's shut down for five minutes...

Okay, well, there's lots worse things than that, actually, but it does get annoying.

very nice short! That's kind of what I want, though the fog not as dense but more spread out like an even haze. Also backlit t with a flickering orange glow like there's a fire in the background. Any ideas as to how to get a flickering glow? thanks

Back-light it with a flickering orange light. Either use a flicker box, or someone rapidly fiddling with a dimmer, or waving their hands in front of the light in varying patterns...

If you want an even haze instead of thick fog, then you want to use a hazer instead of a fog machine.

How safe are these things? When I read 'fog in forest', the fog machine blipped through my mind, then the fact that it's based on a 'heating' elment, then is it safe in the outdoors, especially in a forest... (perhaps my definition of 'forest' is more like the now charred hills of the Angeles Forest north east of LA...)

Well, they get warm, but ... sure, there can be a fire hazard with anything; I would say the generator you use to power the fog machines would probably be more of a fire hazard than the fog machine itself, but yes, it does have a heating element and it does get hot, and therefore proper safety precautions should always be employed.

What you can also do is get a long span of PVC pipe, maybe 30 feet or so. Then drill holes all along it, like a drip system. Put the foggers into the pvc and let'er rip.

I think it was Roger Deakin's that talked about doing this, just for ways of fogging large areas.

I have used a fogger like the one pictured for years, when working in remote locations. No need for electricity, just light it, let it heat up and your ready to go. These foggers work well Rosco fog fluid and others, additionally, in a pinch you can use mineral oil for fluid.
