How to get 60i to slow-mo 24p in FCHD??

Hello, this is my first post ever. I have had my dvx for about 6 months. For the last 3 months I have come onto this community and read tons and tons of posts and have tried to learn all that I can. Any question I have had has always been answered in advance by someone else already asking it. I never felt the need to ask anything because the answer was always there. But now after days of reading countless posts about slow motion, I am left with a problem. I edit in FCHD and I have tried everything I could think of to make 60i into 24p without getting a stutter or strobe effect. Putting it to 40% deinterlaceing, etc, but it never comes out well. I have read The DVX BOOK and done all that I can to get frame for frame accurate 60i to 24p slow-mo. I know I can shoot in 30p and use Cinema tools to convert it to 24p, but I wanted to know if there is any possible way to get it done in Final Cut or will I have to use a pc. I only have my G5 to edit on. Is there any freeware mac programs to do this. If there is a post answering this that i missed in my tiring search, please send me a link. Thank you very much. Peace.

Open in QT Player (you shoudl have pro since you bought FCP)
Load the clip.
File -> Movie to sequence -> Options -> Set JPG, best, 30fps or whatever the fps of original.
This will save one still image for every frame of the movie.
Now go to File -> Open Image Sequence -> select 1st still in fiel browser and at the dialog set it to 23.97 or whatever you want.
Import this movie into FCP. All original frames are intact but now it thinks it was originally shot at 23.97.

Re: How to get 60i to slow-mo 24p in FCHD??

I tried what you said, and all that got me was a slow motion of about 80% of the original footage. i am trying to get the 60i to 24p by getting each field in the 60i and getting 1 half res 24p frame. In other words i want to extract 60 solid frames out of interlaced video. The method you gave me only made a photo of the 2 frames combined, and that works for making 30p to 24p. Thanks for your help, but i still need help getting 60 solid half res frames out of the original 60i. Peace.

Yes, you're getting 1 frame to 1 frame. If you want 1 field to equal 1 frame then you'll probably need After Effects or Commotion or some other programmed designed to do that. You other option is to check out the different plugins for FCP. There are some free one and some expensive ones. Others have posted lists of filter sites to check out.

I think JES Deinterlacer has an option for deinterlacing and creating a frame from each field. This will double the size and duration of the generated file. It will be a 24p that you can easily make into a 24p. I didn't try it myself. I hust know that JES Deinterlacer is buggy in many ways so I can't assure you it will work. But the option is there so if it works it should be the absolute best way.

Thanks guys, that solved my problem. I am using the jes deinterlacer to get each field into a frame, than using the quicktime video to image sequence to make it 24, than importing it into my final cut and it works beautifully. Thanks for your help and advice. This is the best community ever. Thanks for the article also.

Well dvx100shooter,
I am trying to get the slowest slow motion i can get without having to use my frame blender in my FCHD. When I tried just slow motion to 50 percent, i didnt get exact 50 percent speed. i would have a bunch of duplicate frames. I dont think FCHD gets the fields to fill in the spaces inbetween. I have tried cinima tools to conform the video to 24 from 30. I havent used it for anything else other than that.
