How to gel softboxes?

I have three 24"X32" softboxes and I would like to occasionally gel them (CTB). Is it as simple as clothes-pinning gel(s) to the front of the boxes? Can I do this on top of the diffusion material or is this going to cut down too many stops?
Thanks

It will indeed cut down at least a stop of light and perhaps more when you're gelling up from 3200K to 5600K. The best way to handle that is to use fluorescent or metal halide sources in your softbox that are natively daylight then no loss of light. Otherwise, its just something people live with.

You can do it inside, or do it on the outside. Inside generally takes less gel, but it gets hotter/can melt. I usually go on the outside.

Whether you put it inside or outside, the light still has to travel through gel and diffusion material.
