How to fix audio in post

I shot a scene in a moving van. Engine running, slight echo. Is there software that will take out or lower engine noise, smooth out echo... make my dialogue sound "normal." I tried ADR, but the actors just didn't bring the same intensity.

How much do you want to spend? $100? $1,000? $10,000?

The best "software" is your brain. Then you spend lots of time.

A low pass filter will take out some of the engine rumble. There are reverb removers that are partially effective. If you have real echo (delay) you have troubles.

iZotope RX2 is pretty good at smoothing out troubled tracks; it still takes lots of time and lots of patience, however.

depends on how bad the audio is. Your best bet is to hire a competent audio post person to help you with this.....this time.

Now you've learned something for the next time you shoot inside a vehicle.

The short answer is no. There is software that a person who knows what they are doing can use to help them clean up the tracks, but it's the skilled person who is key not so much the software. Software is just a tool.

That said (because I think you were looking for something you could buy that would do some kind of automatic "fixing" of the sound, and that does not exist) even the best tools may not get you where you need.

A lesson for the future is that there is pretty much no valid reason (except for documentary/ journalism shoots) to shoot sound in a moving vehicle with the engine running. There are nine zillion ways to shoot that kind of shot where you never have to shoot sound when the vehicle is in operation.

Folks who have all the money in the world don't do it for a reason, it almost never works out. You don't have $$$$$ to throw at it but mostly the way around it is free. Mostly it's working the shot list and planning the shoot.

Of course if you do have $$$$$ to throw at it PM me and we can work out a deal ;~).
