How to fit a feature length movie onto a DVD?

Do a dual-layer DVD. DVD-9. That's what commercial DVDs are.
If you absolutely must do it on a DVD-5, then lower the bitrate when you render to MPEG-2.
If you absolutely must do it on a DVD-5, then lower the bitrate when you render to MPEG-2.

I know DV D Architect Studio has a burn option "Fit to disc". You might try that. But yeah, a dual-layer DVD would be best.

No. A dual-layer DVD has both layers on one side; the switch between layers is automatic. Probably every movie you've ever watched on DVD had a layer switch in it.
It has no capacity for 24p.
