Call FS to see whether there is a way to get a replacement fan also try the original 40GB and see whether the fan still works.

Hey,

Please excuse my late comment, but you might want to check the power consumption on the old drive compared to the new drive. I recently saw a post where if you replace the drive you need to make sure that the power consumption is the same if not you end up with similar symptoms like your describing.
